The Yates Society

What is the Yates Society?

The Yates Society is a re-envisioning of The Yates Project, which was founded in 2005 and honors Charlie L. Yates, the first African American graduate of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êƽ̨ÍøվͶע. Yates graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1958, earned a master’s degree at Cal Tech, and earned a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins. Later in his professional journey, he returned to °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êƽ̨ÍøվͶע as a professor and eventually a member of the Board of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êƽ̨ÍøվͶעors. In 2003, °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êƽ̨ÍøվͶע dedicated a residence hall, Peddrew-Yates, to Yates and Irving Peddrew, the first African American student at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êƽ̨ÍøվͶע.
